For my Free Inquiry I wanted to find a way to combine two of my passions: food and teaching. After some Google searches, food related educational lesson research, and a discussion with our professor, I have decided to create a food blog based on my travels throughout the lower mainland to a variety of different ethnic food trucks. I plan to visit a variety of food trucks that serve Greek, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Middle Eastern food, etc.

I found a Street Food app that tells you where local food trucks will be and when they will be there and will be using it to help me with this project. If you are interest in this app as well, click here. This will not only fulfill my passion for food but will give me the chance to support local businesses within my community.

Here is sample of the type of map that I have in mind but I would want to place pictures of little food trucks on the country their food originates from.

The blog posts will be targeted to my peers however I plan to relate this topic to my teaching practice by creating teaching opportunities that involve the exploration of food from various cultural backgrounds which will involve learning about these different cultures and where these cultures and their food originate from in the world, as well as will expose students to the idea of entrepreneurship.

I would also plan to incorporate these learnings into an art project where students create a food truck out of paper, cardboard, or simply by colouring a worksheet depending on the age group.

This is just one of the many videos that could be shown to students or that teachers could use to guide them on how to construct a food truck out of paper.

I hope that such a project would help students to:

  • Learn some basics about starting a business, like marketing (the food truck design) and product development (the menu)
  • Improve their creative and artistic skills
  • Learn a little bit about geography
  • Become more culturally aware
