Destination #1: Thai Affair Rolled Gelato
On Saturday, January 31st I ventured out for my first food truck stop. I checked the Street Food app and chose the Holy Taco and Mexi Eats food truck. As I started on my way I noticed that the app was no longer showing the location of this food truck, so I decided to call them to confirm their location for the day. I am glad that I did as they had to close due to a water pump issue with their truck. Lesson learned: trust the app or call to confirm daily locations.
As a result, I made a quick change in my plan and headed to the Thai Affair Rolled Gelato. I am not a fan of sweets, and it was a cold day for ice cream however it sounded interesting as typically gelato is an Italian treat.
When I arrived, I asked the lady working there some questions about where the owner (or owners) got the idea for this food truck from. She told me that the two owners got the idea while travelling in Thailand. Apparently rolled ice cream originated in the Thai street vendors and its popularity started to grow into major cities like Bangkok. Who knew! She also told me that the most popular flavours were Kinder Bueno, tiramisu, and cookies n’ cream so I decided to try the tiramisu rolled gelato which was a very good choice!
I recommend checking them out all year at their White Rock beach location or during the summer at the Richmond Night Market, Creekside Park, and Kitsilano Beach.
