About Me

Hi and welcome to my blog!

My name is Ashley Benevides and I am currently in my second year of the Elementary Education B. Ed. program at the University of Victoria. Through this program I have been gaining the tools and knowledge that I need in order to create a classroom where students feel comfortable, supported, and inspired to learn. With this I hope to create an environment where students feel the same sense of joy that I get when I am in a classroom.

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a teacher and as I got older this feeling grew. I find enjoyment in helping and teaching others especially young kids. As soon as I was old enough I applied to be a Reading Buddy at our local library and help kids (Kindergarten to grade 4) with their reading. Most of the kids in this program were new to Canada and had English as their second language which made it more challenging but all the more interesting. I also volunteered with my elementary school (once I was in high school) helping various teachers where needed. One day when I was volunteering in my elementary school in a grade six classroom, I had this amazing feeling come over me as I realized that this is the environment that I love, this is where I feel comfortable and happy. That day confirmed my desire to become a teacher. Being able to speak with the kids, listen to their ideas, and connect and build relationships with them, I realized how much joy this brings me.

After completing the first year of the Elementary Education program I was lucky enough to obtain an opportunity to volunteer for a grade 1/2 split class at an elementary school in Surrey. I volunteered on and off over a period of 7 months gaining invaluable experience. The class had 2 teachers on a job share which meant I had the benefit of learning from 2 experienced teachers. They were generous enough to show me how they plan their lessons and even allowed me work with students that needed extra help with math and/or English, one-on-one or in small groups. The feeling of happiness and accomplishment that this experience gave me, assured me that pursuing a career in education is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.

When I’m not in class or completing assignments, you can find me listening to music, doing arts and crafts, and spending time with my family when I am home from university in Surrey. I am also a foodie at heart! It is my love language.🥰
