Week 6 Reflection – PD Sessions: Focused Education Resources
Live It Earth | I Am Because We Are
In Week 6 we had to sign up for at least two Focused Education virtual PD sessions. I chose to attend the session about Live It Earth and the session about I Am Because We Are.
“Live It Earth brings the natural world to life for kids with innovative online programs that pair real-world learning with interactive technology. We uniquely create ‘live’ programs for home and school classrooms that inspire kids to care for the world around them and empower them to act on their newfound passion for our planet. Our full roster of programs are cross-curricular, inquiry-based, include Indigenous perspectives, and showcase a different topic each month. “
“The I Am Because We Are educational website and accompanying Teacher’s Guide PDF are critical tools for accessing information about Black Canadian historical and lived experience in B.C. as well as other regions in Canada. The resources are designed for a grades 6 to 9 audience.”
The first session I attended was hosted by Blue Netherclift about Live It Earth which is a science-based educational online learning platform where teachers can choose from a variety of categories such as oceans, animals, and climate change, and will be provided with several resources such as a slideshow and art and STEM based activities they can utilize in order to teach their students said topic.
The second session I attended was a presentation given by a Focused Ed representative about I Am Because We Are which is a Black Canadian online learning platform based on the Ubuntu principles of coexistence, compassion, dignity, solidarity, and respect, that provides teachers with a resource they can use to teach their students about black joy, heroes and rebellions, erasure, African diaspora, black identity, and black excellence. The site even provides a separate PDF Teacher’s Guide.
Overall, both of these sessions were very informative and the resources we were shown look very engaging. I look forward to using these and others in my classroom one day!
